Last weekend some friends headed to the new-ish M Sushi in Durham for a friend’s birthday dinner and it did not disappoint! It was pricey for the Research Triangle area, but had the ambiance of a much larger city, so I guess with that comes larger price tags. We did what all ladies do and shared several small plates. Let me take you on a gastronomique tour du jour.
First up, seafood dumplings in a cacio e pepe sauce. So rich and wonderful, I was happy to just eat one.

Then, there was the bao bun which was full of eel and salmon skin. Kind of a weird one, but fun. Unless the filling changes, I’ll probably skip this combo next visit.

Then there was the Donburi which was a hotpot of shrimp, a few pickled veggies, sushi rice, seaweed, and roe. Very good and again, very rich – perfect for sharing.

Finally came the sushi train! We tried the signature M roll (spicy tuna topped with scallops), California roll (classic), and the Spider roll (I hate these). How pretty is the presentation??

The standout for me was the M roll which I’d happily order again.

M Sushi would make a great date night in Durham. I’d suggest sitting at the sushi bar, watching the kitchen, and ordering slowly as things tended to arrive rather quickly. Make sure that it’s pay day or escape down the meandering bathroom corridor that either leads to an office building, another resto, or the outside world which would be a perfect escape if your date goes fishy.
